Mews House, Holland Park, London W11

This project involved the complete remodelling and extension to a small mews house in Pottery Lane, Holland Park, central London.

The existing house was a small and rather cramped two bedroom property arranged over two floors with a rear courtyard and side yard area. These external areas have been incorporated into the plan of the new house in order to maximise the development potential of the site.

The main feature of the scheme is the new circular stair tower constructed in the rear courtyard. The circular form sits well within the site and is naturally suited to the function of the new stair. The design also reflects the traditional form of the original brick kilns of Pottery Lane, a number of which remain intact in the area.

The remainder of the rear courtyard has been covered by a large electronically operated retractable glass roof. The existing side yard has also been converted into habitable space by removing the wall which separated it from the ground floor living areas.

The completed scheme adds to the conservation area in a positive way; the design of the stair is eye catching and adds interest to the area.
